The complexity of the building stemmed not only from its massive size of 620,000 square feet, but because of UPS' desire to build a "Smart Building", one that is both ultra-sensitive to the environment and its inhabitants, and ultra-adaptive to technological progression.
Special care was taken to avoid much used, but environmentally dangerous, engineering systems and replacing them with alternative solutions.HESM&A engineers dedicated themselves to finding the most cost-effective, environmentally safe solutions for the engineering and design of UPS Corporate Headquarters. The project was bid and constructed eight months before the deadline and well under the original budget. However, the first priority for HESM&A was that UPS' new home meet their expectations and standards. HESM&A is proud that the mechanical and electrical systems have contributed to the development of a facility for a corporation so well known for its efficiency and longevity.
The building, embedded in thick foliage, required lighting which accentuates the interior without detracting from the natural beauty surrounding it. Much care was taken to find the most cost-effective, energy-efficient, unobtrusive lighting design available. Custom fixtures were designed to create a UPS signature statement.
